EDWARD
TUDOR POLE
|
|
|
Actor,
songwriter, musician, man-about-town, Mr Tudor Pole has been purveying
his punk rock ‘n’ roll rhythms since the mid 1970s.
He played an integral part in the rebellious melodrama that surrounded
the Sex Pistols, and later made his mark on the British hit parade
with his popular beat combo Ten Pole Tudor. Today he may be seen
about London’s Soho, strikingly and dapperly dressed and
sharing his firm views on the current degradation of the English
language.

What
is your idea of complete sophistication?
Eating pâté off the firm flat
belly of a young beauty without giving any thought as to how sophisticated
one is, or isn’t.
Who, in your opinion, is or was the quintessential English gentleman?
Is Edward Fox, was Gerald du Maurier.
And the quintessential lady?
My maternal grandmother, née Cecilia
Streeten. “Never brown in town,” she said.
Where do you think the best-dressed people are?
The best dressed are likely to reject the
filth of the city as an environment for their proper attire, where
everyone appears to favour artificial fibred casual wear, and elect
to live in the countryside.
Name three favourite items in your personal wardrobe.
A pair of black brogues bought from a tramp
20 years ago and still going strong. A houndstooth suit tailored
by Mark Powell, and an American southern states bull-s head string
tie; not entirely gentlemanly for an Englishmen perhaps, but then
neither am I.
Which accessories would you never venture into polite society without?
A handkerchief, a cigarette lighter and polished
shoes.
What single situation has been the greatest challenge to your wardrobe
and your personal grooming skills?
Deciding what to wear when I had to give a
lecture on punk rock. After much thought I opted for formal dinner
dress. The right decision.
Which aspects of contemporary life do you think are most prohibitive
of a gentlemanly lifestyle?
Socialists. It may seem a good idea to militate
for an equal society, but what actually happens is that everything
becomes equally mediocre and second rate. To lead a gentlemanly
lifestyle is seen by these misguided people to be elitist. I would
like a society in which everyone was equally gentlemanly.
What items of clothing do you consider to be the height of vulgarity?
‘Trainers’ worn when not playing
sport, but most heinous of all, when worn with a suit.
How do you think young people can be prevented from becoming bad
mannered, sportswear-clad ruffians?
Good manners should specifically be taught
at state schools by gentle people for two hours a week with lavish
praise and prizes awarded for attainment and progress made. Organised
sport should be compulsory for young people at least twice a week,
then they would learn what sportswear is for. Demolish tower blocks
and create playing fields. They would welcome this.
Which view from which window would you describe as “a portal
to the sublime”?
The view of the entrées following the
pâté.
